A video of the Austrian show jumper, Bernhard Maier has caused an uproar on social media.

The disturbing footage taken during the CSI1* in Wiener Neustadt, Germany shows the rider crashing the horse through most of the fences, and carrying on despite loud boos and whistles from the audience, until he was eliminated after two refusals. It has resulted in the Austrian Federation (OEPS) taking swift action in banning Maier from riding...

The final decision still has to be confirmed by other federations and national organisatons. “We’re putting all efforts on the job to call a halt to this type of riding.”

How on earth did this rider get to this level of competition? Poor horse has clearly been bullied into jumping with no firm foundation of confidence and gradual progress. The man's hands are rock solid, with no release over the fences and he resorts to wild kicking and waving of his elbows upon approach, while giving the horse no true guidance or leadership between the fences. Send him back to schooling and lessons and send the horse to a real horse person.

I feel terribly sorry that something like that happened in Austria, where I live! But no matter where it happens, we should know better how to treat our partners...not only in the show ring...
